Chi Rho - the Children’s Romanian Health Outreach - is a Christian outreach to orphaned and abandoned HIV+ children in Constanta, Romania. In our House of New Life – Casa de Viata Nova, our network of foster families and our support to families in need, we provide shelter, holistic physical health care, emotional healing, and vocational and special education to these precious children.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, Romania had the highest incidence of pediatric HIV infection in Europe, and the Black Sea port city of Constanta had one of the highest populations of orphaned and abandoned HIV/AIDs children in that country. In 1992, a small group of Christian men and women founded Chi Rho to reach out to these neglected and traumatized Romanian children - innocent victims of a human tragedy. Chi Rho provided shelter and love to these children, some of whom were so stunted that they were unable to walk or talk and had not been outside their cribs for years. Very few had ever known the loving touch of someone who cared about them or had any hope for a long or fulfilling life.
In 1997 Chi Rho established The House of New Life as a place where these children could start their lives again in a clean, warm and caring environment, and later founded a health clinic to provide medical and dental care to those shunned by the traditional health care system. Today, Chi Rho continues to provide these special children with a loving touch and the promise of a meaningful future. Chi Ro is accredited by Department of Protective Child Custody in Romania and we answer to County and National and authorities for our work.
